Health Care

The Milwaukee Region is a hub for high-quality health care, advanced medical training and research. The Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, a sprawling campus just west of Milwaukee, includes the Blood Research Institute, which is world-renown for its exploration of heart disease, cancer, autoimmune deficiencies and sickle-cell anemia; the Medical College of Wisconsin, a major teaching and research institution; Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, which is ranked the third best children's hospital in the nation and is internationally recognized for its cardiac, neurology and bone marrow programs; and Froedtert Hospital, a tertiary-care facility that operates the region's Level 1 Trauma Center.

Most of the region's health care is provided through several integrated health care delivery systems that operate hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Aurora Health Care, the largest system in the region, operates nine acute-care hospitals in the region.

Other major health care systems include:

• Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, which operates four hospitals in Milwaukee, Racine and Waukesha counties
• Columbia St. Mary's, which operates three hospitals in Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties
• Froedtert and Community Health, which operates two hospitals in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties
• ProHealth Care, which operates two hospitals in Waukesha County
• United Hospital System, which operates two hospitals in Kenosha County
• Synergy Health, which operates one hospital in Washington County
