Transportation

Whatever your preferred mode of transportation, we've got it – interstates, international airports, Amtrak, commuter rail, buses, ferries and bike trails – plus the second-shortest commute time in the nation.

General Mitchell International Airport is the primary commercial airport serving the area, which is served by 11 commercial carriers and offers nonstop or direct service to more than 50 different locations. The airport offers 200 daily departures to 90 destinations overall. Average airfares out of Mitchell are lower than fares at 58 other U.S. airports, according to U.S. Department of Transportation statistics. Mitchell was also ranked in the top 10 small airports — those with fewer than 10 million passengers annually — in the latest customer satisfaction study by J.D. Power and Associates.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, the 4th busiest in the world, is just a 90-minute drive south of Milwaukee.

Major carriers AirTran Airways and Frontier Airlines operate hubs in Milwaukee. AirTran was ranked number one in the 2008 Airline Quality Rating study and offers service to more than 40 destinations from Milwaukee, including nonstop service to 18 locations. Southwest Airlines has also expanded into the Milwaukee market, offering a dozen daily flights and service to 49 cities.

Rail service in the area includes Amtrak, which connects the region with Chicago, the Twin Cities and points west. The region is also served by Metra, a commuter train that provides regular daily service between Kenosha and Chicago.

There's even a high-speed car ferry, the Lake Express, that crosses Lake Michigan to connect the region with southern Michigan, bypassing Chicago traffic.

Urban bus and transit systems in the region offer a range of routes and services in the Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine and Waukesha metro areas.  There are also freeway flyer and commuter bus services available between Milwaukee and outlying communities.
